…offers training scholarship to geography department best graduating student.
In a bid to survive the ever changing, technology driven 21st Century, The Rector, Nigeria -Korea Friendship Institute, Williams Charles Oluwatoyin has urged undergraduate students to pay attention to acquiring relevant 21st skills and vocational training.
The Rector made this on Thursday while delivering a lecture as the guest speaker at the first Symposium/Convention of the National Association of Geography Students, Federal University Lokoja. He similarly offered a training scholarship to the best graduating student in the department of Geography, FUL.
While delivering the Lecture which focused on “The 21st Century Education, Contemporary challenges and Realities”, The Rector asserted that such type of education emphasizes not only on acquiring knowledge, but for students to acquire certain skills that are essential for success in the 21st century work place.
He pointed out that the work force needs across industries was rapidly changing, hence learning that prepare undergraduate for real-world relevance and application must be given priority. He pointed out further that creativity, innovative and critical thinking must be inputted in school’s curriculum so that students can develop this all important traits.
He pointed out that current challenges facing education in the 21st century particularly in a country like Nigeria requires a multi-faceted approach which involved government support, infrastructure development, teacher training, curriculum reforms, equitable resource allocation among others.
The Rector alluded that addressing these challenges and Realities also innovative approaches and a willingness to adapt to change. He noted that education system in the country must collaborate with policy makers, educators and other stakeholders to develop strategies that will prepare students for the challenges, opportunities and realities of the modern world.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwunmi who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor on Administration, Prof. Abdullahi Emmanuel Bala appreciated the Rector for honouring the invitation of the department, delivering a thought provoking lecture and the scholarship offering.
The Head of Department, Geography, Dr. J.O folorunsho alluded that the teachings about skill and vocational training was very timely adding that the department has keyed into this trend and was ready to continue to work with institute like NKFi to facilitate such training and certification opportunities for its students.
The high point of the occasion was the Presentation of an award of recognition for contribution to the development of Education to the Rector, NKFI, Williams Charles Oluwatoyin.
