The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has declared the Inspector General of the Police, Ibrahim Idris, as an enemy of democracy and unfit to hold public office.
President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, made the declaration on Wednesday after the police boss declined to honour Senate summons for the third consecutive time within two weeks.
The red chamber summoned the Police boss on the 28th of April and 2nd of May but he failed to appear, sending his Deputy, Joshak Habilah, despite calls and text messages by the Leader of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Abu Ibrahim.
The senate decision was the outcome of a 30 minutes closed door session after which Saraki declared IGP “an enemy of democracy and not fit to rule any public office within and outside Nigeria.”
He noted that the conduct displayed by Idris shows “a gross disrespect to our constituted authority.”
He then mandated the Senate Leader to further look into the matter for further necessary action.
