Kogi’s Future in Focus: Governor Bello’s Governance Success and Ododo’s Chances for Continuity

By Halimat Ohunene Isah

In the ever-changing world of politics, where the achievements of an administration in office and the potentials of the new leader who would succeed them are ever crucial because they shape the future of the region, whether it’s a country, state, or a small community. The reason every government works diligently and twice as hard other times if need be to leave their mark when given the chance to serve and work to install those who can sustain and build upon the already existing efforts.

Kogi State is no exception, as it eagerly awaits the November 11th governorship election where the one who will take over needs to have a clear cut vision for a better Kogi with the capacity to build on the achievements of the current administration under the leadership of Governor Yahaya Bello, and as well focus on areas that needs to be strengthened for the peoples overall interest.

One of the earliest and most commendable actions of Governor Yahaya Bello upon assumption of office in January 27, 2019, with the vision to transform Kogi State into a thriving hub of progress and unity as repeatedly stated by him, was the formation of Operation Total Freedom which commenced in September 2016, involving the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police, DSS and Nigerian Security and Defence Corps and the purchase of one hundred and sixty (160) operational vehicles (hilux vans), which were strategically distributed among the state’s security agencies to effectively tackle the challenge.

Apparently, before the coming into power of the Bello-led government there were numerous security challenges and lawlessness which made citizens and passersby live and plied Kogi roots in perpetual fear, as Kogi roads became a den of kidnappers and armed robbers, frequent kidnap cases on highways, cases of terrorism, cultism, political assassinations, political agitations, pipeline vandalization, Fulani/host community clashes and amongst others.

Between 2012 and 2015, a staggering sixteen bank robbery cases were recorded in the state. Terrorism and Boko Haram activities had already gained a foothold as early as 2011, with incidents involving the creation of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), attacks on security agencies, and harm to innocent citizens. Bank robberies, in particular, posed a significant challenge, with several banks falling victim often to these attacks across the various Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the state, resulting in the loss of valuables, lives and millions of Naira.

Specifically, November 2011 witnessed a series of attacks on First Bank in Kabba Local Government Area. Bearing the grim alarming record of one hundred and sixty-seven (167) cases of kidnapping between January 1, 2015, and June 13, 2016. Tragically, during the years 2011 to 2015, over 51 lives were lost to terrorist attacks, Kogi Central Senatorial District alone endured eighty-six (86) kidnap cases between 2015 and 2016, while the Western and Eastern Senatorial Districts experienced forty-two (42) and thirty-nine (39) cases, respectively. The situation took a strange turn when even places of worship became targets. In an appalling act, the Deeper Life Church in Eika Adagu was attacked the same year, resulting in the loss of 19 innocent lives.

The Department of State Services (DSS) was not spared either, with an attack in September 2015 that claimed the lives of three (3) individuals. Evidently, security agencies themselves were not immune to the relentless wave of terror. In November 2011, Kabba Police Station came under attack, resulting in the tragic loss of two (2) lives. Similar incidents unfolded in December 2011 at Aiyetoro-Gbede Police Station and in Ankpa in 2012.

Governor Yahaya Bello who early enough understood clearly the implication of insecurity on coming into power that development will be impeded and not thrive in an environment where security is not guaranteed, was proactive and quick to combat the menace, with a well-structured established intelligence gathering team. This team meticulously analyzed the root causes, identifying critical stakeholders ranging from traditional rulers to youth leaders and market women who could assist in salvaging the issue.

One cannot discuss this transformation enjoyed as at today in Kogi State without acknowledging the pivotal role played by the Whistle Blowing Policy that greatly helped in the recovery of weapons proliferation among unemployed youths which significantly contributed to the surging crime rates. And the devastating ripple effect of manipulation materialised during the 2011 and 2015 General Elections when even more weapons fell into the hands of youths, who were co-opted as political thugs.

Governor Yahaya Bello’s unflinching commitment to the security of Kogi State has indeed borne fruit, an effort that has gained him recognition and commendation both home and away. This transformation is nothing short of remarkable. And it is essential to equally recognise the multifaceted efforts that contributed to this inspiring journey of progress, thanks in no small part to the dedication of the State Security Adviser, Navy Commander Jerry Omodara (Retired), who consistently goes above and beyond and up his game and is exemplary in security management.

Noteworthy, in a recent groundbreaking development, is Governor Bello declaring free education from primary to secondary school levels, marking a significant stride towards enhancing free access to quality education. Crucial examinations such as BECE, JSSCE, WAEC, NECO, and JAMB are now accessible to all students in public schools in Kogi State without financial constraints which are visionary policies. The construction of state-of-the-art educational institutions like the Ultra-modern GYB Model Science Secondary School in the three senatorial districts of the state has not only democratized education but has also made it more enticing to the populace. The establishment of the University of Kabba soon to commence recruitment of lecturers is another great accomplishment of this government. CUSTECH in Osara, amongst others is worthy of mention.

On healthcare, Kogi State has witnessed the establishment of a World Class Reference Hospital in Okene. This institution equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, which are recognised as some of the finest in West Africa with its capacity to handle complex medical and surgical cases is proof of Governor Bello’s commitment to healthcare excellence. Additionally, the Bello Health Care Insurance Scheme that has continued to provide free healthcare for over three thousand (3000) Kogi people across the three senatorial districts and the recently completed ultra-modern hospital in Badoko, Ajaokuta Federal Constituency, ready for use since August 2023, further expanding access to top-notch healthcare services.

The transformation of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital Lokoja which is not anything short of extraordinary. The hospital’s revival includes the construction of a cutting-edge Administrative Complex with two suspended floors, the establishment of a dedicated Psychiatric Department, and the comprehensive renovation and remodeling of the entire hospital. These developments are a giant leap forward in healthcare infrastructure in Kogi State. The renovation of Cottage Hospital Adavi-Eba and College of Health Science & Technology Idah. The provision of three (3) academic blocks, construction of an ultra-modern clinic, and renovation/supply of laboratory equipment.

Furthermore, the construction of perimeter fencing and a gatehouse (completed), in College of Nursing, Obangede. The construction of two state-of-the-art General Hospitals in Eganyi Ajaokuta Local Government Area and Gegu–Beki Kogi Local Government Area respectively. Cottage Hospital in Adavi-Eba has undergone extensive renovation, while the College of Health Science & Technology in Idah has also seen impressive progress, with the provision of three academic blocks, the construction of an ultra-modern clinic, and the renovation and supply of laboratory equipment.

Graciously, the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Obangede celebrated a milestone a few days ago as over 120 students graduated.

Notably, Governor Bello’s visionary leadership and his commitment to holistic development deserve accolades for ushering in this era of transformation and prosperity.

On the Prospects of Alhaji Usman Ododo:

As the November election approaches, the outlook for Ododo appears quite optimistic, as there is a strong probability of his success based on his antecedent and characteristics as a meticulous leader – someone who truly connects with the people. As those who know him personally and some others he has aided who see great positivity in him are unlikely to disappoint him due to the impactful experiences they either would have had under his guidance or via a mere encounter with him.

It is undeniable that there is considerable focus out there right now on the promising potential of Alhaji Usman Ododo with many eagerly waiting and continuing to pay attention to his credibility, competence, and capability by examining his track record and critically analyzing his chances of winning the election. Ultimately, the key question is whether he can become, succeed, be able to fulfill the people’s expectations, in delivery and build on promises if entrusted with the mandate which should not in doubt.

Ododo, a man described by many as a visionary leader, the son of a farmer with great love for his people who did not forget his roots. But went back home where he started off when destiny smiled on him – establishing a farm where over three hundred workers are engaged (location is Kogi Central) and earning their daily livelihood. An action one would say is a pointer to an innate desire to positively impact the lives of the people and improve their livelihood, rather than invest in proceeds outside the state, seeking personal gain or political advantage. One will not be wrong to say that Ododo is the kind of leader that has conquered self with vision and hope for the people from all indications.

He is that such leader with great prospects for future positive impact, that stands a chance that will endure the test of time and creditably deliver dividends to the people for being renowned for his selflessness and exemplary leadership qualities as many of his subordinates serving him directly have all had a positive change in story. A principal that embodies the essential attributes of a strong leader, including empathy, compassion, accountability, consistency in character, and transparency – which are qualities every impactful leader should possess.
Nonetheless, what truly sets Ododo apart from others and make his chances bright are the numerous heartwarming personal stories that verify and confirm his direct impact on the lives of his constituents. True life stories that reflect his genuine commitment to the welfare of people.

One such story involves one Hajia (name withheld) whose health challenge got Ododo’s attention. Despite not having a personal relationship with her, Ododo, upon hearing about her situation, sponsored her medical trip to Dubai. An act that earned him love and accolades from those who were privy to hear about it.

Another of his generosity, was when he provided financial assistance to a young man (a physically challenged) requiring a medical procedure to be able to walk again. An act of kindness that was prompted after he watched a video shared by the SSA on Electronic Media to the Governor, Hon. Avoyi Nwogu on her social media platform calling for help for the man. A gesture that further showcased Ododo’s readiness and willingness to support any in need without hesitation. These are just a few out of the countless, as records in some hospitals have it that he keeps offsetting medical billings of many every end of the month without noise. Granting scholarship awards to financially challenged students without needing to know them. This is what empathy, compassion and enthronement in the heart of the people is, they can never forget this act in a hurry.

Further to this, is the construction of an ultra-modern hospital that caters to the health needs of the people of Upogoro in Okene Local Government where he hails from. An initiative that has not only enhanced healthcare accessibility for the people but also created job opportunities.

In conclusion, Governor Yahaya Bello has carved his name into the annals of Kogi State’s history. As his administration has achieved notable accomplishments that have had a positive impact on the state and its citizens. However, the incoming government should take into consideration life insurance for all security agencies that are committed to this assignment of safeguarding Kogi roads, as that will further spur them to risk it all. Build more schools, provide free educational materials such as textbooks and writing materials for indigent students, and improve hygiene facilities for female students, especially.

Finally, as for the prospects of Alhaji Usman Ododo, connecting it to the upcoming election and as we move closer in earnest, there is no doubt that the APC governorship candidate will emerge victorious based on all the hints. Those who truly see him for who he is and know he has the competence and integrity to move the state forward will work hard for his ascent to power.
His chances are promising; for he has before now earned for himself a good reputation. His exceptional qualities as a leader, combined with the compassion and selflessness he constantly displaces, all together make him a compelling choice for those seeking a brighter future for Kogi State and its people. His personal stories and achievements they have said is impressive and signal a positive future for Kogi State and its residents under his leadership if he is elected.

End.
