The Kogi State House of Assembly has passed two bills into law to regulate the road traffic and water supply sectors of the state at the end of the session plenary on Friday 8th June, 2018 held at the Assembly Complex Lokoja.
First to be attended to was HB- 21; A Bill for A Law to provide for the establishment of Kogi State Water Supply and Sanitation Law 2018.
This law seeks to create legal frameworks for the management and administration of the water sector in the state, whereby the sector can be self sustaining for effectiveness and efficiency.
The new law will introduce metering system whereby each house especially in Lokoja metropolis will be provided with meters to ascertain the volume of water used.
This will again create employment opportunities for the teaming youths and also generate revenue for the state.
While the second bill is HB – 22; A Bill for A Law to provide for Road Traffic and Vehicle Inspection in Kogi State and other connected purposes.
This law also seek to create legal frameworks for the regulation of the sector in the state whereby there would be rules to guide conduct on the roads.
The laws also empower the Vehicle Inspection Unit to sanction any erring road users especially those who drive against the traffic and indiscriminate parking in unauthorized points like the road sides across the state.
However with the passage of the law, any driver that drives against the traffic lights or officers in charge or refuse to follow the rules will have to pay #50,000 fine or get his vehicle impounded.
The passage of these two bills, bring the total number of bills passed to law by the Sixth Assembly to Six while 10 bills are awaiting public hearing with 8 bills at various stages of committee scrutiny.
The Speaker, Rt Hon Prince Matthew Kolawole who was highly elated thanked the Almighty God who kept the entire members of 25 in the last three years since the Sixth Assembly was inaugurated, noting that all the members are hale and hearty.
He commended the support and cooperation he enjoyed from his members, management and staffs of the Assembly which enabled the success story so far.
He said without the maximum support and cooperation of the Executive arm led by Governor Yahaya Bello, the Sixth Assembly wouldn’t have been able to record the kind of achievements so far under the year under review.
Members who spoke on behalf of each senatorial district commended the Governor for his monumental achievements across the state, appealing to him not rest on his oars but rather should continue to do his best for the state.
The Governor who was the Special Guest at the third year anniversary and end of session plenary, lauded the leadership qualities of the Speaker, urging members to continue to work for the benefit of the people.
