Cleric Advocates For Re-run Election In the event Of President’s Death, Condemn Zoning System

The National Chairman Council of Ulama’a Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), Shakih Sani Yahaya Jingir has advocated for Re-Run election for re-election of President in case of the president’s death in office .

The cleric said a situation were the mantle of presidential power automatically falls on the vice president should be reviewed and changed Re-Run election that would see the emergence of new president.

He also condemned the zoning system as many people from different sections of the country are now subscribed to,as he call for the election of the best candidates irrespective of religion, ethnic or tribal affiliation.

Yahaya jingin gave the advice during an interaction with some journalists In Jos the Plateau State Capital.

He seek for constitutional amendment, of the; “old system.”

Nigerians should be allowed to conduct a Re-Run election if by paraventure any sitting president dies.

He said from the onset, Nigerians are voting for the President but not the vice President, as he called for the amendment of the Constitution to correct the electoral anomalies.

“One old system that is seeking for correction is the voting into office of President and vice President, a situation where if the voted President dies, the system will say swear-in the vice President, but we did not voted for the vice President,”he added.

Jingir said:” If the President dies another election should be allowed to be held, and if the vice President wants to be President he should also contest to be voted as President.”

He expressed  fears of having over ambitious vice president that might conspired with others to harm the President to automatically became the president.

“But if he knows that election must be held before he becomes the President, he wouldn’t continue with his ill plans,” Jingir added.

The cleric further encouraged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to streghthen the use of card readers and other genuine means of ensuring more credible, free and fair elections in the Country.

According to the cleric the; “used of card reader in the previous elections have blocked elections rigging, the electoral umpire should strengthen its uses, so that the People’s  votes should count. “

Shikeh Jingir said political parties should discard the systems of rotation on which side will field candidates in an election.
