Jigawa state police command said that no fewer than One Hundred and Nineteeen illegal firearms, out of which 104 were den gums, Sixty five rounds of ammunition, and Six life cartridges were successfully recovered.
This was made known by the Command’s Police Commissioner, CP Bala Maza Senchi during a press briefing in his office at the Command’s headquaters in Dutse.
He said that the exercise is under IGP’s directives of seizure of illegal firearms mopping-up exercise across the country.
According to him, the exercise tends to tackle the proliferation of firearms that has direct bearing on the current insecurity prevalent in most states in the federation.
The recovered illegal firearms include three AK 47 rifles, two AK 56 rifles, three locally fabricated rifle, one Dicon pistol, one pump action, five locally made pistol, and ten locally made guns.
“Most of these recovered arms were voluntarily surrendered to the police task force by the owners, while some are yet to show- up”
The Commissioner un-behalf of the Command’s task force on retrival of illegal firearms from the hands of the public called on those that were yet to surrender their arms to do so or by made to face the wrath of the law.
“We are aware that about sixty personalities within Dutse metropilitan are in possesion of illegal firearms, and were given time to oblige to surrender otherwise we will force them to surrender”, he warn.
“People in the state who have not surrender their prohibited firearms to expediously do that before the task force swing into action on forceful recovery of such arms”
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, gave the order to all the state commissioners of police and FCT in February, to recover all the arms in public possession within 21 days.
