The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested and detained one Ibanga Akpabio who is a younger brother to the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, over alleged financial malpractices.
Although, Ibanga who is the Deputy Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in the state is said to be undergoing investigations over his alleged involvement in the defrauding of a member of the Federal House of Representatives, Robinson Uwak, his arrest is coming at a time an audio implicating the chairman of he EFCC leaked online.
In the leaked Audio tape, Ibanga who was in a telephone conversation with an unknown party mentioned Magu’s name several times boasting about the EFCC boss’ willingness to help deal with his purported political adversaries in Akwa Ibom state, especially a certain Robinson Uwak.

In one part of the audio recording, Akpbio was heard saying the EFCC boss has assured that he will not act on a petition filed before the commission against a member of the House of Representatives. “Can you see this stupid boy, he is serving a reminder,” Akpabio quoted Magu as saying, adding that “that he’ll plan for it. ”
But while Akpabio, whom a source said was arrested and detained at the Zonal offices of the EFCC in Port Harcourt is currently being interrogated over allegations of fraud and money laundering, the EFCC has disowned Akpabio over the Audio tape implicating its chairman, Magu.
The EFCC in a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwajaren, said the claims in the tape especially as it affects Mr. Magu are patently false.
“The EFCC boss has never met Ibanga Akpabio all his life and could not have been party to any violent scheme to settle unknown political scores in Akwa Ibom State. Indeed, if Magu were Akpabio’s Man-Friday as he would have his ‘friend’ believe, he would not today be a suspect answering to charges of fraud before the Commission,” the EFCC spokesman said.
He further advised members of the public are therefore enjoined to disregard the recorded conversation as plain braggadocio.
