AbujaTHE House of Representatives Committee on Governmental Affairs hasannounced a National Stakeholders’ Conference on Public Service Delivery inNigeria aimed at engaging government on key issues to be addressed in theprocess of passing the SERVICOM Bill.
The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, is expected to inaugurate theconference which would serve as a public hearing/stakeholders’ forum tohighlight challenges of implementation of the SERVICOM compact in MDAsfrom inception as well as provide feedback to government on issues aroundSERVICOM.
While the focus of the National Stakeholders’ Conference is largely to reviewthe present state of service delivery in the public sector, it is also targeted atparticularly identify existing obstacles to effective service delivery.
The conference themed: “Building Government Capabilities for ServiceDelivery: Implementing Performance” is aimed to fit the needs of MDAs and allgovernment officials who are directly involved in bettering a nation throughgood governance, strong leadership and innovation.
A keynote paper on thistheme will be delivered by the Governor of Kaduna State – Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.According to Ambassador Victor Walsh Oluwafemi, Executive Director ofAfrica Development Studies Center (ADSC), co-organizers of the event, thelack of efficient service delivered by the public service is principally due to thedearth of commitment and performance improvement by the public servantswho are saddled with the responsibility of providing these services.
Amb.Walsh further identified the lack of infrastructures in the public sector, poormaintenance of existing infrastructures and low confidence in the sector bycitizens of the country as obstacles bedevilling effective service delivery inNigeria.
By the tenets of SERVICOM, the consideration for the needs and rights of allNigerians to enjoy social and economic advancement and dedication to deliverservices to which citizens are entitled timely, fairly, honestly, effectively andtransparently especially since SERVICOM is about service.
