In continuation of police investigations into the alleged sexual harassment at the Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) camps in the North East, two soldiers, two policemen and a prison warder, have been arrested for their involvement in the scandal.
The Inspector- General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, said this on Tuesday, during a monthly conference with zonal Assistant Inspector Generals of Police(AIGs) and the state Commissioners of Police( CPs. )
He said that one Airforce personnel, two civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) members and one civil servant from the Borno State Ministry of Agriculture, were also arrested
The IGP, said that female detectives have been deployed to the IDPs’ camps, so as to stem the rising tide of sexual harassment in the camps
The IGP said that the two policemen implicated in the sexual scandal will be dismissed from the force before charging them to court, while due process has to be followed for other service personnel arrested.
On the protest of non -payment of allowances during Ondo State governorship election, the IGP said that in line with Federal Government directives of TSA, money is being paid directly to those involved in the election’s accounts but unfortunately, most of them were sending wrong account numbers.
He expressed surprise that some policemen don’t know their account numbers or may be they were afraid that their accounts were being investigated and assured them that there is nothing like that but to ease the payment of their allowances.
He directed the CPs to take personal interest when sending the list of their officers involved in election duties and ensure that correct account numbers were sent so as to avoid future occurrence.
On the Rivers rerun on Saturday, he said that they have started the deployment of officers and directed all the CPs in the contiguous states to attend a stakeholders’ meeting to be presideded by him, in Port Harcourt, tomorrow.
Also, on the allegations by the Rivers State governor, Nyeson Wike, that he had withdrawn his Chief Security Officer (CSO) and security guards, the IGP said, “I don’t want to trade allegations with the governor but all I can tell you is that the police have cordial relationship with all governors.
On the illegal road blocks being mounted by his men, the IGP restated that road blocks had already been banned, but checking of vehicle particulars helped a lot in detecting stolen vehicles.
